Destination Summary

Lake Neusiedl, Austria

Lake Neusiedl is Europe's biggest steppe lake and destination of Surf Worldcup for over 15 years. It is 40 minutes from the capital of Austria, Vienna. It has multiple spots around the lake and is well known for its good wind conditions in Central Europe. You can kite here almost every week and most of the time even several times a week. The most wind you have during pre season from March to June and after the summer from September to late Oktober and if the temperature is good even in November (some hard-core dudes even ride during winter when the lake's surface is not frozen). In summer it is very hot and it can also be very windy several days a week, but it is not as save for wind as it is during the rest of the year.
There are two main wind directions, north-west and south. The North-western wind is a weather wind, so it comes when a weather front with pressure change is going through and it is very constant and strong.
The South(-Eastern) wind is a termical wind and can become very strong and gusty. In Podersdorf on the east side of the lake, you have a big and long beach with several spots where you can go kitesurfing. Here you have the perfect spot for every condition at the lake (wind nearly always side shore or side on-shore), some nice surf shops and great Bars and Restaurants. Neusiedl at the north of the lake is very good when there is south wind, but it is on shore and the chop can be very rough.
Breitenbrunn on the west side of the lake is also very good when wind comes from the south, but you can also ride when the is North-Western. Here the wind is also mostly side shore and there is a big beach.
