Destination Summary

Ringkøbing Fjord

Ringkøbing Fjord is Denmarks probably most versatile kite destination.

It's basically one big "lake" that stretches roughly 30 km north to south and 10 km west to east and is connected to the rough north sea at the fisherman's town called Hvide Sande. You will find a spot for every wind direction within 45 min drive which gives you a pretty good yield throughout autumn, winter and spring. Though it may be a disappointment during mid summer, when high-pressure areas dominate. So pack your 5-6 mm wet or even a dry suit and make use of frequent storms blowing. From my own experience you'll have 70 % chance of kiteable winds from October to March with something around 10 % of days overall giving you big air opportunities (> 25 kt). Winds from western directions will provide flat water paradise at Kloster or Bork Havn. Especially Hvide Sande or Klitmøller and Hanstholm 2 h further up north will hold additional variety with it's (jetty sorted breaks) that will work as a good surf and easily bring a swell of 2 to 3 m.

Infrastructure-wise the Danish people know, how to make the best of their cold and windy weather. You'll find plenty accommodation options in one of a couple of hundred holiday homes. They mostly hold a fireplace, sauna and whirlpool to defrost your toes. Cultural live - not even to mention night live - is simple to non-existent here. Instead, after getting your action on the water you might choose from
- walking your dog through endless dunes,
- taking your children to the candy factory in Blåvand
- shopping scandi design items in the picturesque town of Ringkøbing
- visiting the unique whiskey distillery at Stauning
- or grabbing a book and relax.
